Learning and networking opportunities in Aerospace and Defence
As a leading group of British precision manufacturing companies, Expromet Technologies Group is proud to support the growth of aerospace, defence and advanced manufacturing in the South West. On 23 January, we hosted a WEAF Somerset Cluster Meeting at Metaltech Precision in Chard, Somerset, bringing together members of the West of England Aerospace & Advanced Manufacturing Forum (WEAF) to share our expertise, to learn and network.
WEAF is the leading association for defence, aerospace and advanced engineering companies in the South West of England. As one of the largest aerospace and advanced engineering clusters in Europe, WEAF provides a strong voice for members, as well as representation and access to prominent regional, national and international decision makers in industry and government.
Metaltech Precision General Manager, Steve Ward, taking members of the WEAF Somerset Cluster on a guided tour of the machining, fabrication and assembly facility.
For over 20 years, WEAF has provided a valuable platform for sharing industry information, networking and events. The purpose of this WEAF Somerset Cluster Day was to allow members within the Somerset area to learn from and network with other members, developing business opportunities and making new connections.
Expromet’s cluster event focused on Recruitment, Skills and Training, vital areas for manufacturing companies. As the backbone of the British economy, the manufacturing sector drives innovation and growth. However, the industry faces a skills gap that threatens its future.
Steve Ward, General Manager at Metaltech Precision, shared valuable insights into the challenges of recruitment and retention, and how Metaltech is successfully navigating these issues. Challenges in the Somerset region and across the industry include:
Investing in apprentices is at the core of Metaltech’s project to help future-proof the industry, encourage innovation and maintain high standards.
“We have worked hard to raise awareness of UK manufacturing as a career choice,” says Steve. “Over the last three years, we have worked from the ground up with our local community – from visiting pupils in Year 6 and 7 (age 10-12) to joining college open days and careers events, becoming recognised as a substantial local employer. This groundwork is key to exciting young people and their families about the possibilities of training with a British manufacturing company such as Metaltech Precision.”
In 2024, Metaltech took on four apprentices as part of a fresh apprenticeships initiative, with an aim to continue this intake year on year. The business works closely with local schools and colleges to empower young people with real world skills. Steve explained that apprentices bring numerous benefits to Metaltech Precision and Expromet group, as well as to the manufacturing industry and our local community.
Expromet is committed to creating opportunities that build skills, empower the next generation and contribute to a stronger, more dynamic workforce. As a proud member of The 5% Club, we actively support this industry-led initiative, which promotes ‘earn and learn’ opportunities through apprenticeships, sponsored student placements, and graduate training schemes. Having already achieved the 5% target, we remain dedicated to investing in talent and fostering the skills essential for the future of manufacturing.
Steve also shared with the Somerset Cluster the Training and Development opportunities provided at Metaltech, explaining that ongoing training lays a strong foundation for both personal and business growth. Last year, twelve team members undertook a three-day leadership training programme with SWMAS, who trained the team in leadership through management tools and techniques.
Expromet also welcomed Joe Verrall from MDE Consultants to the Somerset Cluster meeting. Joe shared innovative approaches to recruitment strategies within the aerospace industry. Attendees engaged in interactive workshops and discussions on key topics such as recruitment drivers and exploring our ‘Plan B.’
WEAF Somerset Cluster members found the morning inspiring, and our team were proud to conclude the morning concluded with a tour of the Metaltech facility, providing a behind-the-scenes look at our capabilities.
A huge thank you to WEAF for organising this fantastic event and to everyone who attended for making it a success!
