How lights-out CNC machining delivers faster lead times, greater capacity and a more resilient supply chain for customers

Author: Stuart Franklin, Commercial Business Manager at Metaltech Precision

Metaltech Precision now supports near-continuous CNC machining – delivering faster lead times, greater capacity and improved supply chain resilience for customers in aerospace, defence, energy, pump and valve and other precision industries.

Lights-out CNC machining allows metal component manufacturing companies to increase efficiency by using automated systems to maintain production outside normal working hours. Metaltech Precision is now investing in round-the-clock manufacturing capability to benefit customers: delivering metal components more quickly, with improved capacity and greater supply chain resilience.

What is lights-out manufacturing?

Lights-out manufacturing is a production approach where factory machines operate without human intervention. Automated machines can run through the night, over weekends and beyond standard working hours.

What is lights-out CNC machining?

Lights-out CNC machining capability relies on automated loading systems, intelligent tooling management and real-time monitoring to maintain output and quality without an operator present.

In subcontract CNC machining, lights-out capability is significant because it effectively multiplies available production hours without adding headcount, and without compromising the precision tolerances demanded by performance-critical industries.

Metaltech Precision’s latest investments in automation

Metaltech Precision has invested in advanced automation systems that enable true lights-out CNC machining across our facility in Somerset. Stuart Franklin, Commercial Business Manager, explains that this provides both additional capacity and the flexibility to meet short deliveries for our customers:

“Our five-axis machining centres can now run for 30 to 40 hours without operator intervention, meaning a job set up on a Friday afternoon can continue to run through the weekend and be ready by Monday morning.”

The new investment builds on our existing automated gantry multi-tasking capability and complements our 50+ CNC machining centres, which include fixed head turning, vertical turning, sliding head, 5-axis milling and multitask machining.

Metaltech Precision Tuscan TMA 130 Automated Pallet System

Tuscan TMA 130 Automated Pallet System

Automated pallet loading systems are designed to keep CNC machine spindles running continuously. Our new 32-pallet, palletised automation system feeds two milling machines (one 5-axis and one 3-axis) and can be used to run multiple ‘shorter run’ jobs in sequence, or for long-run operations.

  • 2 x mills: 1x simultaneous 5 axis and 1x 3 axis (UV650 and NXV600A)
  • 32 pallet system – robot fed
  • Envelope of 600mm sq.

In addition to providing high-volume lights-out machining, this end-to-end automated solution:

  • increases milling capacity
  • enables shorter production runs across multiple complex jobs simultaneously
  • is capable of machining complex geometries such as impellers and control boxes.
  • can perform surface rendering.

Nakamura multi-tasking centre with bar feed and robot billet loading

Metaltech Precision’s Nakamura-Tome WT-300 is a highly automated multi-axis lathe (or turning centre). Twin spindles and twin turrets enable the machining of two parts simultaneously, reducing cycle times and manual handling.

The Nakamura includes automated bar feeding and is supported by automated billet loading from a Hydrafeed RoboJob robot arm, meaning the multi-tasking CNC machines can work around the clock with minimal supervision.

  • Bar-fed components up to 63mm diameter (suited to components such as fittings, nuts, flanges, etc.)
  • Robot arm billets from 63mm to 200mm finished diameter, subject to weight limit on robot arm (suitable for flanges, pipe-ends, pump and valve mechanism, engine components etc)

The team has experience machining a range of materials on the Nakamura, including exotic metals such as Remko soft iron which requires specialised expertise to machine efficiently

NFX400 with Tuscan RC35 (40-vice automation)

Metaltech Precision’s NFX400 is a simultaneous 5-axis vertical machining centre designed especially for small, complex, high-quality parts often used in aerospace, automotive and medical applications.

The NFX400 is supported by a Tuscan RC35 high-speed, high-precision CNC machine tending automation cell developed by YMT Technologies, and is part of a cell of automation including the UV650 system.

Sliding head and Miyano turning centres

Further lights-out bar-fed capacity is provided by our sliding head and Miyano turning centres, further extending overnight and weekend throughput.

What lights-out CNC machining means for customers

For procurement managers and engineers in performance-critical industries, automated 24/7 machining has direct, measurable implications for project delivery, capacity planning and supply chain management.

Shorter lead times

Where machining was previously constrained to standard working hours, lights-out operation extends production across evenings, nights and weekends – without additional headcount. A job set up on a Friday afternoon can complete over the weekend and be ready for despatch on Monday morning. This extra runtime translates into significantly faster turnaround times, particularly valuable for urgent orders or programmes with fixed delivery milestones.

Greater capacity and flexibility

Lights-out CNC machining creates capacity headroom that benefits every customer. Automated cells can handle multiple jobs in sequence, meaning urgent orders and demand peaks no longer compete with standard production in the same way. For customers with variable volumes or complex components requiring multi-axis machining, this flexibility reduces scheduling constraints and supports more responsive order management.

Supply chain resilience

Consistent, reliable delivery is a deciding factor when selecting a subcontract machining partner, especially in sectors where component lead times affect operational readiness. Metaltech Precision’s 24/7 machining capability supports supply chain resilience for customers in:

  • Aerospace
  • Defence
  • Oil and gas
  • Pump and valve

When programme schedules are fixed and volume consistency matters as much as unit quality, a machining partner with genuine lights-out capability provides a level of assurance that standard-hours operations cannot.

Consistent part quality, around the clock

Automated machining does not mean reduced oversight. Every component produced during an unmanned overnight run is held to the same tolerances as those machined during staffed hours: verified through Metaltech Precision’s CMM inspection process and ISO 9001 and AS9100-certified quality management system. CNC machining centres with robotic support maintain consistent performance across repeat operations, including high-volume runs and complex geometries.

A committed long-term manufacturing partner

Metaltech Precision’s ongoing investment in lights-out automation reflects its approach as a long-term supply chain partner rather than a transactional supplier. Supported by the Expromet Technologies Group, Metaltech offers the stability, capacity and continuous improvement that performance-critical customers require over the long term.

A more efficient workforce

Rather than reducing headcount as a result of automation, Metaltech Precision is focussing on higher-value skills. Instead of reloading machines, our machinists are training to design the programmes that allow machines to work continuously – and increased automation also means fewer repetitive or physically demanding jobs for the team.

As Dassault Systèmes noted in their 2026 CNC Machining Trends report:

“This new wave of automation is less about replacing workers and more about amplifying skilled labour — letting one technician oversee several machines, interpret analytics, and manage exceptions rather than repetitive loading tasks.”

Metaltech Precision is continuing to recruit and develop our team to upskill and design the programmes that allow those machines to run continuously and intelligently.

Consistent quality

Every component produced during an unmanned overnight run is held to exactly the same tolerances and machining quality control as those machined during the day, verified through Metaltech Precision’s CMM inspection process and ISO 9001 and AS9100-certified quality management system. CNC machining centres with robot support are consistent throughout repeat operations, including high-volume or complex production runs and materials.

Sustainable manufacturing

This investment in automation reflects Metaltech Precision’s approach as a long-term manufacturing partner. Our 50,000 sq ft facility in Somerset is powered by our own on-site solar farm, making us one of the more sustainably operated machining businesses in the UK. Automation extends that commitment, as optimised machine cycles mean reduced energy per part and a smarter use of resources.
